The next most necessary thing
So many of us are looking for answers.
Seeking certainty on our direction of travel.
“Is this really to be my purpose in life?”
“Is this a good idea?”
“Will anyone care?”
We want all our ducks in a row before we act. We want to feel safe and secure in the knowledge we won’t get found out.
But we can never know what will work or won’t work. And anyway, everyone is winging it (some are just better at hiding it than others).
Brain surgeons get imposter syndrome. CEOs worry they too will get rumbled.
All we can do is put one foot in front of the other.
This Carl Jung quote from 1933 says all you need to know about moving towards a life that nourishes you:
“If you do with conviction the next and most necessary thing, you are always doing something meaningful and intended by fate.”
You might not know where you’re going.
But I can bet you have a next step that is tugging at your curiosity.
So by all means learn the tools, tactics and techniques. But find the courage to become friends with fear.
Develop a mindset of play. Of possibility. And yes, a little pain.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt over the last 20 years it’s this:
Navigating entrepreneurship on your own is really hard (and a lot less fun).
So do it with others. We grow best in community. This is where our mindset starts shifting. Reflections lead to realisations.
Remember, the fear is not you.
It’s just telling you something.
